Brief History of the Journal

Belvedere Meridionale was launched in 1989 as the journal of the history students at Juhász Gyula Teachers Training College. Its aim has been to provide a publication forum for the initial scientific activity of the students at the Department of History. In 1992 there were organizational and editorial changes at the journal, resulting in a broader spectrum of editors and readers. Thus, beyond papers of young historians, those of academicians and professors of history and of politicians were welcomed. We were extremely honoured to publish works of Kornél Bakay, Kálmán Benda, László Blazovich, Kálmán Eperjessy, Tamás Katona, Gyula Kristó, Ernő Lányi, Gyula László, Ferenc Makk, Egon Maróti, Imre Polányi and Gyula Szekfű. It is and remains, howerer, our primary goal to keep an inspiring proportion between students' and teachers' papers.

In the last ten years, Belvedere Meridionale repeatedly published articles about the history of teachers training in Hungary. We had extra sections for the Hungarien holocaust, the connection points in the history of the Usa and Hungary, the 1956 revolution, the history of Hungarian railways, and the local history of Szeged and the South Hungarian Plain. We also paid great attention to the sufferings of the Hungarien minorities abroad. From 1990 on, the editoial board has been publishing the proceedings of the scietific events organized by the staff and students of the Department in the Belvedere Meridionale Booklet Series. Up to now, 12 volumes of the Booklets have been published. The journal is financed by grants from sponsors and foundations.
